Research Project Title
Changes in stream ecosystem functions along a rural-urban gradient
Description
Urban and rural development has led to the modification of natural streams. These alterations are likely to alter the composition of in-stream communities, which may be reflected by ecosystem functioning.
The aim of this project is to assess the changes in two ecosystem functions along a rural-urban gradient; phosphorus retention and stream metabolism. These two functions were chosen because they reflect the efficiency of resource processing within streams.
This project will demonstrate the influence of changes in land-use upon the efficiency of resource processing within streams and demonstrate those conditions that will promote efficient processing of resources.
