Changing Approaches to the Interpretation of Classical Chinese Poetry
Description
Chinese characters are etymologically linked with nature, therefore, Chinese poetry composed in characters is linked to nature. The content of classical Chinese poetry is traditionally bound to natural images. Consequently, English re-creations of classical Chinese poetry is historically and contextually tied to natural resources.
Water is the basis of life.
Chapter 8 of the Tao Te Ching (500BCE) says:
The highest goodness resembles water
Water greatly benefits myriad things without contention
It stays in places that people dislike
Therefore it is similar to the Tao
Dwelling at the right place
Heart with great depth
Giving with great kindness
Words with great integrity
Governing with great administration
Handling with great capability
Moving with great timing
Because it does not contend
It is therefore beyond reproach
